What is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)?
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) measures four preference scales (dimensions of personality). This inventory was based on theory of personality developed by Carl Jung. This measure which was further created by a mother-daughter team is the most widely used personality inventory in the world. I was intrigued to have determined my preference as ESFP. First, I am an extrovert which means that I am energized by other people and external experiences. Characteristics of an extrovert include being friendly, talkative and easy to know, which I also feel that I entail those qualities. People are very important to me and that is true with extroverts. The ‘S’ stands for sensing which means that I see specific parts and pieces and live in the present. A characteristic of someone who is sensing starts at the beginning and takes one step at a time. This reminds me of myself in everything that I do. For example, writing this paper. First, I have to highlight the essence in what I want to talk about and then I write an outline. After the outline, I begin writing a draft and then finally end with the final draft. I also get more out of my learning when I work hands-on in order to understand the overall design which is another characteristic of sensing. The ‘F’ represents feeling which indicates that I am concerned with values such as relationships. I often see myself taking a personal view on things and I am good at understanding people. Lastly, the ‘P’ signifies perceiving. I view my life as flexible, adaptable and ‘a go with the flow’ type. I am very curious and do enjoy doing things spontaneous at times. Overall, this inventory really hit home with me. I can honestly say that each type truly reflects my life and style. What is your personality type?

How could schools use the MBTI?
Schools could use the MBTI for team development and understanding. More specifically, educators could better understand differences between students’ preferences, as well as, behavioral habits that develop as students use their preferences.
